Under the IICRC S500, Category 2 water contains significant contamination — microbial, chemical, or physical — and has the potential to cause discomfort or sickness if contacted or consumed. What “significantly contaminated” actually means
The word that defines Category 2 is significant. The water carries a meaningful load of contamination — bacteria, detergents, food residue, dissolved soils, fine particulate — but it has not reached the gross contamination of sewage or floodwater. In practical terms, it is water you would not want to drink and would not want sitting on your skin, but which has not yet been overrun with pathogens from a fecal or storm source.
That middle position is the whole point of the category. It changes two decisions at once: how the water is handled (with protective equipment and disinfection, but not full biohazard protocols) and what can be saved (porous materials are candidates for cleaning and drying rather than automatic removal). Those two consequences are what separate a Category 2 job from a Category 3 one.
Where Category 2 gray water comes from
The S500 names sources whose discharge is inherently contaminated enough to qualify as Category 2 at the outset. The common thread is water that has already done some work — cleaning dishes, washing clothes, passing through a fixture — and picked up contamination along the way.
- Dishwasher and washing-machine discharge or overflow — carrying detergents, food residue, grease, and laundry soils.
- Toilet bowl overflow containing urine but no feces — contaminated, but not the fecal-source water that defines Category 3.
- Sink, tub, and shower overflows that have contacted soap, dirt, or organic residue.
- Aquarium or waterbed leaks, which carry biological contamination.

- Water discharged from a system — such as a punctured water bed or a broken appliance line that has run through a contaminated component.
The health risks of gray water
Category 2 water is contaminated enough that exposure carries real, if moderate, health risk. The contamination is biological and chemical: bacteria from food and organic residue, soaps and detergents, and whatever soils the water has passed through. The realistic exposure routes are:
- Ingestion — the most direct risk, especially for children who may touch a wet surface and then their mouth.
- Skin and wound contact — prolonged contact, or contact through a cut or abrasion, can introduce bacteria.
- Eye and mucous-membrane contact — splashing during cleanup.
- Inhalation of aerosols — when extraction or agitation throws fine droplets into the air.
These risks are real but proportionate: Category 2 does not call for the full respirator-and-containment posture of a sewage or floodwater job. It calls for sensible barrier protection and disinfection. Over-reacting to gray water as if it were black water wastes effort; under-reacting and treating it as clean invites illness and mold.
How Category 2 compares to Categories 1 and 3
Gray water is defined as much by what it is not as by what it is. Placing it against its neighbors is the fastest way to understand it.

The line between Category 1 and Category 2 is contamination level: clean versus significantly dirty. The line between Category 2 and Category 3 is severity of that contamination: significant versus gross, with Category 3 carrying pathogenic and toxigenic agents that make it a biohazard. Category is not the same as class
A frequent confusion is to treat “Category 2” and “Class 2” as the same thing. They are not, and conflating them leads people to misread a loss entirely.
- Category answers how contaminated is the water? — Category 1 (clean), Category 2 (gray), Category 3 (black). It drives health precautions and what gets removed.
- Class answers how hard will this be to dry? — Class 1 through Class 4, based on how much water was absorbed and the resulting evaporation load.
A loss has both a category and a class, and the two numbers are independent. A gray-water spill across a small tile floor might be Category 2, Class 1; gray water that has soaked an entire carpeted room could be Category 2, Class 2 or 3. Why gray water does not stay gray
The most important operational fact about Category 2 is that it is unstable. The S500 is explicit that category can deteriorate — clean water degrades to gray, and gray degrades to black — driven by three forces. IICRC S500
- Time. The longer the water sits, the more bacteria multiply in it.
- Temperature. Warm conditions accelerate microbial amplification; a heated home in summer is a bioreactor for stagnant water.
- Contact. Water that wicks through soiled materials, soils, or contaminated cavities picks up additional contamination.
In day-to-day practice, restorers commonly treat Category 2 water that has sat untreated for roughly 48 hours or more as having deteriorated to Category 3, because at that point microbial amplification has likely outpaced the original assessment. The number is a working rule, not a hard threshold — warm, stagnant conditions can accelerate it, and prompt extraction can hold the line. What gets cleaned versus removed
Because Category 2 water is contaminated but not a biohazard, its materials are candidates for restoration rather than automatic discards — the key difference from a Category 3 loss, where porous goods are generally removed.
- Often restorable, if addressed fast: carpet (with cushion frequently replaced), drywall that has wicked only a limited height, and structural wood — provided they are cleaned, disinfected, and fully dried before the category degrades.
- Frequently removed: carpet cushion, which holds contamination and is cheap to replace; and any material that stayed wet long enough to support microbial growth.
- Cleanable: hard, non-porous surfaces — sealed concrete, tile, metal, solid wood — which can be cleaned, disinfected, and dried.
The decisive variable is time. In water reuse and plumbing, graywater is the relatively benign wastewater from sinks, showers, and laundry that some systems capture for irrigation — a resource, not a hazard.
